I was not in Melbourne last weekend but I understand that there was the
usual large autumn gathering of Australian Hoons around the much degraded
lake. They were there in lesser numbers than last year but were estimated
at about 50,000 individuals, mostly males, on each day. As usual they
seemed to be attracted to the spot by enormously loud noise and giant
screens erected around the lake.

A single male Lesser Victorian Hoon or Trumped-up Corella was sighted among
the other species. This showy but rather stupid species was thought to be
almost extinct, but ironically because it is much sought after by hunters
and taxi drivers, it may be saved from extinction.

No other birds were recorded.
