Hi from a monsoonal Cairns
Just returned
from a trip to Cooktown, 200km + north of Cairns as the Pied Imperial Pigeon
flies. (Northern Queensland for those who don't know).
Highlight would have to be 9 Red Rumped Swallows on wires by
the turn off to the Daintree River Ferry, about 105km north of Cairns, they were
perched with Tree Martins and showing off their red rumps despite the pouring
rain. A Brown Booby was unexpected on the Cooktown Wharf. Several pairs of Pied
Monarchs at Shipton's Flat, great bird. Trip report to follow for all those
interested.
Also of interest today (31st) was a
Great-billed Heron alongside the Barron River by Cairns Airport in mangroves, a
rather brownish bird which would indicate a juvenile. Also 2 White-winged Black
Terns at the airport, first for the wet season.
