Dear Birders

Many thanks for the comments on the melded wood duck family. This family
has now gone up to 34 or 35 young (hard to keep count!) - it would appear
in 3
separate stages. Does anyone know what happens here? Do young just 'drift
off' from other broods by mistake? Do parents desert and others adopt? Why
don't the adoptive parents notice? - they don't seem to discriminate (I
gather birds can't count, but don't they identify their own by smell?)

Pat.
