Birdwatchers may be interested that the concept of jizz has been
applied to the identification of other organisms. The most important
taxonomist of amphipods (small crustaceans), Jerry Barnard, himself a
very keen birdwatcher, used the term in his 1991 guide to families and
genera of world amphipods. There are over 5000 species of amphipods in
aquatic and some terrestrial habitats and identification usually
involves dissection and close examination of legs, mouthparts etc under
the microscope. Trained taxonomists, however, can rapidly assign
amphipods to families, partially using the jizz of those animals.
