Wollongong: 11.00am: Container ship on fire. 7th August 1997
A large cargo ship, believed to be a Coal Frieghter, was on fire 4 nauticle
miles off
Wollongong. Local Fire figthers attended the Blaze. A spokesman for the NSW
Fire
Brigade commented that it was like a fire in a multi story building, only at
sea!
At present there is little danger of an oil spill.
Captain Carl Loves and the Sandra K, SOSSA Research vessel, were chartered to
take WIN 4
TV reporter and Cameraman to the striken ship. We are keeping an eye on the
situation,
fearing for local seabirds. The Little Penguins are presently returning to
breed on the
Five Islands an Oil Spill could spell disaster. The current estimated
population of
Little penguins on the Five Islands here at Port Kembla off Wollongong. Is in
the order
of 2000 pairs.
We will advise of any change to the situation.
