Hi Aussie Bird Netters

A while back someone sent in a letter about Point Lillias and the
relocation of the chemical storage facility from Coode Island. According
to the letter the Government was going about this a bit hastily and
requested that we send letters of concern to Senator Robert Hill.

I did this and have just received a detailed letter explaining the thinking
behind the removal from the Government's side. Apparently the Commonwealth
Government agrees with Victoria that the removal is in national interest.
Also they have (in exchange) agreed to add 240 hectares to the Ramsar
Wetland Site at Phillip Bay. Also they are to enhance the habitat at Snake
Island to create additional Orange-bellied Parrot habitat. There will also
be an additional 'buffer zone' of 500 hectare around the proposed port &
chemical storage area.

Questions arising are: Is the exchange worth it? Is the potential of
contamination at the storage plant impossible? And will someone really
ensure that all the improvements/exchanges actually do take place?

Regards
