Dear Lorne,
A couple of birders and I have just been drinking ourselves silly for our
birthdays, absolutely delighted we made another one. Plumed = P. o.
plumiferus if I remember correctly, southern subspecies of Marbled
Frogmouth. (Look up an old Cayley: you will find it with the Polka-dot
Boobook of Innot Hot Springs). When Greg Roberts and I rediscovered it
(Plumed not the Polka-dot) in 1976 (while I was working on Platypus Frogs -
which are now apparently extinct - in the Conondale Range, SEQ - through no
fault of mine) it was thought not to exist. In fact the editor of Emu (God
rest his sole) would not let us mention Plumed Frogmouth because it was not
on the RAOU checklist. I'm glad he didn't, because we would have lost a
great story about the inanity of sticking to checklists where it prohibits
new information from being published. In fact, we had to publish the
discovery as a range extension of Marbled: you got to laugh, it was nearly
a 2000 mile range extension.
