I notice that the Bird Observers' Club of Australia (BOCA), of which I
am a member, consistently describes itself as 'The major birdwatching
organisation in Australia'. In the Bird Observer (its monthly magazine)
for March 1996, at page 10, it states that, as at 1 Sept 1995, it had
4,181 members including family members.
Now I do not, in any manner, want to encourage destructive competition,
but I wonder about this:
* How many members does BIRDS Australia (formerly the Royal
Australasian Ornithologists Union) have?
* When BOCA describes itself as 'The major birdwatching organisation in
Australia' is it saying, in reality, that it is the ONLY national
'birdwatching' organisation, and that BIRDS Australia is not a
'birdwatching organisation', it is something else, perhaps an
organisation focusing on research and conservation rather than
'birdwatching'?
Anyway, the most important aspect of this, I suspect, is that
Australia's 'major birdwatching organisation' has a piddling 4,148
members. No wonder the habitat destroyers have it so easy!
