BOPPAS for short, or "Bird Observers of Pumicestone Passage and Surrounds"
went to Conondale, Bouloumba Creek and Little Yabba Creek for their regular
fortnightly outing on Monday 18th. For the BOPPAS which are centred around
Bribie Island and Caloundra under the leadership of Beverley Durrant, the
journey to these sites took only two hours by car. The day yielded 82
species. The highlight of the day had to be the abundance (about 10 separate
sightings)of Wompoo Fruit Doves at Bouloumba Creek including the view of one
sitting on a nest.A Currawong cast its "evil" eye over the nest but the
sitting parent did a good cover-up job and the Currawong lost interest. One
Wompoo, feeding on the fruit of a Piccabeen palm was in brilliant sunlight
and its radiantly coloured plumage was a delight to see.
