I am still worrying a bit about Paul Fennell's request to post a list of
birds that are not currently obviously threatened, but should be watched. I
felt that I could not really do so because ALL birds need to be watched for
decline or other demographic changes.
I still feel this. However, there was an article in Wingspan 9 (March 1993)
by Doug Robinson, titled 'Vale Toolern Vale: the loss of our woodland birds'
which contains a table of 57 species of 'Land birds not yet listed as
threatened but declining or locally extinct in districts of southern Australia'.
The emphasis is on birds with regional or local declines, not national ones.
Some seem surprising - such as Rainbow Lorikeets, Brown Falcons and Zebra
Finches. However, it may alert people who feel that a particular bird is
thriving that it may be trouble elswhere.
If anybody without access to this issue of Wingspan would like a copy of the
table (or the whole article), please let me know.
