Subject: Magpies

I have just read the message about magpies gathering wire.
I haven't seen anything like this, but it reminded me of the magpies I
watched at a nest  last year.   There was an adult and a young one (still
very grey on the chest).
For days the adult sat on the nest, whilst the young one hung around.   Then
to my astonishment, the roles were reversed and for about four days it was
the juvenile which did the sitting and the adult would come backwards and
forwards to feed the juvenile!
After that they both disappeared so I get the feeling it was all a bird
version of a phantom pregnancy.             Annabel Hoskins
