Hi all,

Wanted to share an opening with this group. I'm the CTO of Sofar Ocean and we're hiring a Principal Scientist, Underwater Acoustics to set technical direction for our underwater acoustics platform. Sofar builds ocean sensing hardware (our Spotter buoys are deployed globally for wave/weather data) and we're expanding into acoustics.

What the role involves:

• Developing classification & localization systems for underwater acoustic sensing
• Advancing ML models for acoustic intelligence, both in the cloud and on the edge
• Evaluating sensing system design tradeoffs, working closely with hardware, software, and firmware engineers.

What we're looking for:

• Deep expertise in underwater acoustics with hands-on experience building sensing systems or algorithms (marine acoustic propagation, signal processing, real-world operational systems)
• Ph.D. in acoustics, ocean engineering, or a related field preferred — but Sofar will consider highly qualified candidates with equivalent experience
• Bonus: embedded systems/edge processing knowledge, experience with autonomous platform constraints (power, bandwidth, compute), comfort working in production codebases

We're building for both commercial and defense applications, and bio & vessel classification & tracking. That said, this role requires U.S. citizenship and eligibility to obtain a security clearance. In person 3 days/week in SF preferred, but not required.

Salary range: $137,000–$185,000.
