DESCRIPTION;LANGUAGE=en-US:Dear bioacousticians\,\n\nOn Wednesday\, July 29
 th\, from 11am to 12pm ET\, we're thrilled to welcome Kerry Stewart<https:
 //www.birds.cornell.edu/home/staff/kerry-stewart/>\, a Christopher W. Clar
k Postdoctoral Fellow at the Cornell K. Lisa Yang Center for Conservation
Bioacoustics\, for a talk focused on passive acoustic monitoring for ecolo
gical integrity assessments. Kerry will make the case that PAM is offering
new and effective ways to assess if\, how\, and why habitats are changing
across large temporal and spatial scales. Her abstract below gives a grea
t description of her talk.\n\nZoom link for the meeting: https://cornell.z
 oom.us/j/94632241116?pwd=86tC0YbenW1ce0ufIeohgpenEobbdd.1\n\nTalk abstract
: Ecological integrity describes whether the characteristics of an ecosyst
em occur within their natural ranges of variation and is measured through
three components: ecosystem structure\, composition and function. However\
, most assessments of ecological integrity measure only structure (via rem
otely sensed data) and do not include any information on ecosystem composi
tion or function.\n\nWhile the time and resources required to monitor anim
al communities at scale have previously impeded the inclusion of animal da
ta in ecological integrity assessments\, passive acoustic monitoring can i
ncrease the spatial scale\, taxonomic breadth\, and temporal resolution of
monitoring. Including animal community data in ecological integrity asses
sments can reveal whether community composition is sensitive to human acti
vity despite small changes in habitat structure (e.g. empty forests syndro
me)\, whether community composition is resistant to change\, despite large
alterations of habitat structure\, and other nuances.\n\nBy combining com
munity data with information on species' ecological and morphological trai
ts\, community composition can also be used to infer ecosystem multifuncti
onality. Kerry will present an example using data gathered in the Sierra N
evada to show how information on animal community composition gathered wit
h passive acoustic monitoring can enhance ecological integrity assessments
.\n\nIf you work on biodiversity monitoring\, ecosystem functioning\, biod
 iversity/carbon credits\, conservation planning\, love David Bowie\, or yo
u've ever wondered what a satellite misses but PAM catches\, this one's fo
r you!\n\nAll the best\,\n\nBen\n\np.s. Last week I accidentally sent this
invitation to a different bioacoustics listserv. I apologize for the late
invitation to this Wednesday’s session (and for the spurious email to t
he other listserv). For those interested\, I hope you’re able to make it
. No matter what\, we will post the video on our YouTube page<https://www.
 youtube.com/playlist?list=PL9iLFNlWcYEV2BsbHQAel2wOtplp62LL_> shortly ther
eafter.\n\n\n\n\nThis email and any files transmitted with it may contain
confidential information. If you believe you have received this email or a

y any contents of an email received in error.\n\n
