DESCRIPTION;LANGUAGE=en-US:Dear bioacousticians\,\n\nOn Wednesday\, July 29
 th\, from 11am to 12pm ET\, we're thrilled to welcome Kerry Stewart<https:
 //www.birds.cornell.edu/home/staff/kerry-stewart/>\, a Christopher W. Clar
k Postdoctoral Fellow at the Cornell K. Lisa Yang Center for Conservation
Bioacoustics\, for a talk focused on passive acoustic monitoring for ecolo
gical integrity assessments. Kerry will make the case that PAM is offering
new and effective ways to assess if\, how\, and why habitats are changing
across large temporal and spatial scales. Her abstract below gives a grea
t description of her talk.\n\nTalk abstract: Ecological integrity describe
s whether the characteristics of an ecosystem occur within their natural r
anges of variation and is measured through three components: ecosystem str
ucture\, composition and function. However\, most assessments of ecologica
l integrity measure only structure (via remotely sensed data) and do not i
nclude any information on ecosystem composition or function.\n\nWhile the
time and resources required to monitor animal communities at scale have pr
eviously impeded the inclusion of animal data in ecological integrity asse
ssments\, passive acoustic monitoring can increase the spatial scale\, tax
onomic breadth\, and temporal resolution of monitoring. Including animal c
ommunity data in ecological integrity assessments can reveal whether commu
nity composition is sensitive to human activity despite small changes in h
abitat structure (e.g. empty forests syndrome)\, whether community composi
tion is resistant to change\, despite large alterations of habitat structu
re\, and other nuances.\n\nBy combining community data with information on
species' ecological and morphological traits\, community composition can
also be used to infer ecosystem multifunctionality. Kerry will present an
example using data gathered in the Sierra Nevada to show how information o
n animal community composition gathered with passive acoustic monitoring c
an enhance ecological integrity assessments.\n\nZoom link for the meeting:

u've ever wondered what a satellite misses but PAM catches\, this one's fo
r you!\n\nAll the best\,\n\nBen\n\n\n\n\nThis email and any files transmit
