About the job
We are looking for a bioacoustics expert and ecologist to participate in different projects
worldwide around passive acoustic monitoring, wildlife monitoring, and ecosystem integrity assessments. The successful candidate will work with machine learning tools for the extraction of relevant ecological information from passive acoustic monitoring data
as well as contribute to the design and implementation of the acoustic component of field methodologies in region-wide / large area wildlife monitoring programs and the development and application of hardware and software tools for passive acoustic monitoring
of biodiversity.
Who we are
biometrio.earth is an innovative, cutting-edge natural resources monitoring company with
the mission to bring transparency and accountability into the market for carbon offsetting strategies and certification. Founded by scientists and software engineers with academic credentials in ecology, carbon economics, remote sensing, machine learning and
bioacoustics, we have hands-on experience in developing and operating carbon and biodiversity monitoring systems in the field and laboratory settings. Our core innovation lies in intelligently combining state-of-the-art systems like deep-learning driven satellite
data analysis chains with in-situ deployed biosensors (audio, image and video) to measure and monitor NbS projects.
We cooperate with various academic institutions to extend the reach and scope of bioacoustics
in conservation, wildlife monitoring, rewilding, restoration and other related projects.
Essential functions
• Analyse bioacoustics data from terrestrial biomes across the world.
• Contribute to the research design of our projects and advanced data analysis (e.g.,
occupancy models, linear and non-linear models).
• Network and coordinate with other companies, NGOs, and academic institutions to generate
databases to train AI models.
• Cooperate in model improvements and extraction of ecological indicators.
Qualifications and experience
• Ecologist, biologist, or similar, with 3-5 years of work experience, master's or PhD
• Knowledge of ecological concepts and experience with biomonitoring using acoustic devices.
• Ideally knowledge on NbS projects and concepts (Nature-based solutions).
• Ability and willingness to work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations,
in hazardous terrain, and under physical demanding circumstances.
• The successful candidate will interface with our DP&SD (Data Products and Systems Development)
team developing processing pipelines for automated audio processing.
Competences:
advanced degree in ecology, geo-ecology, or biology; advanced knowledge and experience
in deploying and using acoustic devices to assess species richness, abundance, and other ecological indicators. Knowledge of community ecology, population ecology, biodiversity indicators, soundscapes, experience in field-based monitoring, ecological theory
and ecosystem knowledge, knowledge of international standards for measuring sustainability (social, ecological and economical), proven capability in budgeting, project management, and staff management in diverse teams and environments.
Languages:
proficient in English, written and spoken, + proficiency in French, Spanish or Portuguese
is required. Proficiency in a third language is considered an asset, proficiency in German is an asset.
Ideally also: experience in analyzing large acoustic datasets, experience in community-based
project development, experience working with local communities for wildlife monitoring.
