BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION: The Department of Marine Resources (DMR) is hiring two positions to lead passive acoustic data analysis programs. The positions will be the lead on passive acoustic projects, including planning and designing the projects within their program and setting program/project protocols, goals and timelines that assist with data gaps or management needs. The positions will also be responsible for managing data collection, data storage, quality checks, acoustic analyses, and statistical analyses using detection or ambient noise data depending on the program goal. This position will also supervise a team of scientist I positions, including dividing up projects and tasks amongst analysts, leading team meetings, overseeing data analysis and checks, and setting priorities and timelines for staff. The positions will also be responsible for disseminating information that comes out of their programs by publishing in the peer-reviewed literature, representing the agency at meetings and conferences, and making recommendations to the policy group and Commissioner’s Office. Finally, the positions will work across programmatic lines within the Division of Marine Resources to foster collaboration and maximize DMR’s strengths. These scientists will also be expected to disseminate results in peer-review literature and may seek grant funding opportunities as appropriate.

 

These positions will supervise support staff and may functionally supervise external partners working on related projects. The tasks that are delegated may include meeting with fishermen for outreach, implementation and logistics of field work and data collection, data entry and acoustic analyses.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES PREFERRED: Knowledge of coastal Maine fishing industries and general fishing practices is necessary. Knowledge of techniques and project design related to marine electronics, fishing gear including the operation and maintenance, ability to troubleshoot equipment failure, and communicate clearly with a range of stakeholders is preferred. A high level of organization and project management experience is necessary. There is a preference for a candidate with experience in spatial and statistical analyses, relational databases, as well as the knowledge and ability to apply for competitive grant opportunities. Knowledge of MS Office products, R, SQL, and GIS (R & ArcGIS Pro). This position requires excellent communication skills and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A Bachelors Degree in a scientific, technical, or engineering field or equivalent in directly related work experience and three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in the field of marine resource research and/or management or related field.  Preference will be given to previous experience in a supervisory capacity. Equivalent experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.

  • Health and Dependent Care Flexible Spending Accounts– Set aside money pre-tax to help pay for out-of-pocket health care expenses and/or daycare expenses.
