Dear colleagues,
some of you already know that I am organising a bioacoustics knowledge cafe during the IUCN congress in Jeju, S-Korea, on 8th Sep 2012, see
http://portals.iucn.org/2012forum/?q=0317
From the feedback of IUCN participants I realise that more than on technical issues there is interest on the potential of the technique and its applicability for conservation -the overlap with real bioacousticians as you listmembers seems to be
rather limited!
I think in only 2 hours the best we can get is a group of
interested conservationists/IUCN specialists to agree to improve acoustic data sharing and develop common bioacoustic monitoring which can be used by IUCN specialists,
and, hopefully are not limited to certain taxa.
In any case, and as you can see from the link,
http://portals.iucn.org/2012forum/?q=0317
the Jeju bioacoustic knowledge cafe website is a nice platform, and I am trying to prepare the cafe
as good as possible. To this end I need your input:
- please spread the word among those attending the congress AND possibly interested in bioacoustics
- please send me links to relevant sites,
- I already added some discussion points, and I would be happy to enlarge this section, even if you don´t attend the congress
(citing your name).

I think we can learn a lot from marine bioacousticians, who seem to use acoustic monitoring for red-listing Cetaceans already - so I am particularly interested in your input, and even hope to see you in Jeju. Personally, I am an entomologist, presently engaged in acoustic monitoring at Hymettos,Greece
(www.amibio-project.eu).
I hope we can use this event as a starting point for better cooperation of bioacoustic monitoring
across taxa!
Yours sincerely Klaus Riede
