Hi Stim,
It's great to hear from you!
The sounds in this file are quite high -- it shows two relatively broad frequency bands, one centered at about 7.5 kHz and the other at around 10 kHz. So it might be that your computer playback system isn't giving you much output up there. Or, as you suspect, maybe this particular MP3 file flavor doesn't play properly on your Mac. It's a big file, so I just saved a small chunk of what seemed to be the best signals.
Let me know what happens,
Charlie

Hello All, including Hi Charles,

I did my PhD on acoustic communication in notonectids (Buenoa spp.), and am pretty familiar with the sounds you're listing to. But I can't hear them on my computer, alas, though the sound track shows. It doesn't make sounds to me! I'm using a Mac, though I can't see that that should make a difference. If you can send me another track, or in a different medium, that would help, if you want.

The freshwater underwater world is indeed magnificent!

(I am now retired, so can help if you want.)
