Located in the Finger Lakes region of New York State, Cornell University

<tt>Cornell's Lab of Ornithology is seeking a Prog/Analyst III to design and
implement sound analysis software and support ongoing and future
research in the field of animal bioacoustics in the Bioacoustics
Research Program. Current research projects include basic research on
acoustic communication in whales, elephants, and a variety of bird
species, as well as conservation-oriented research using sound as a
means of monitoring populations of threatened and endangered species.
Software development activities include work on the existing Raven
project as well as other internal tools and future projects. Must be
able to interact well with others, including software developers,
software users, engineers, and biologists. Responsibilities will include
planning, designing, scheduling, implementing, and tracking of software
projects. This is not merely a project oversight position but includes a
large percentage of time writing code. Implementation of software
applications will be in Java, C++, C, and/or MATLAB. Additional growth
opportunities exist to lead project teams in the future.</tt><br>

<tt>Qualifications<br>

Bachelor's Degree with focus preferably in Computer Science, Computer
Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field; 2-3 years of
experience or equivalent developing complex software applications.
Experience with object-oriented design and programming, knowledge of OO
and UI concepts in a programming language like Java or C++. Sufficient
knowledge of signal processing to independently design and develop
signal processing software. Proven expertise writing object-oriented and
signal processing software. Ability to write specifications that can be
given to other programmers on a team for implementation. Candidate must
have proven experience in software development on complex projects
working with other software developers. Ability to mentor other
programmers to help them grow in their design and implementation
abilities. Fluency with sound and image processing techniques and theory
is very important. Experience using project management tools will be
beneficial. Demonstrated ability to interact with others on a
collaborative team toward a shared project goal. Analytic demands are
high, with frequent application of advanced reasoning and problem
solving skills. Requires the ability to adapt and improve existing
methods or to develop innovative ones. Demands good judgment and
organizational skills, with a capacity for critical, creative
thinking.</tt><br>
