for advice on recording equipment might also be of interest
 to others so I am sending it to the list.

 I suggest "Sonifex Courier" the specifications can be found
 at "<a  href="http://www.sonifex.co.uk/courier/cospec2.shtml&quot";
rel="nofollow">http://www.sonifex.co.uk/courier/cospec2.shtml&quot</a>;. It has
 two advantages, in my opinion:

 1) It gives a very clean recording, very little machine noise.
 For an equipment comparison we did last field season please see
 "<a
href="http://www.whale-watch-east.com/research/2003/right_column.html&quot";
rel="nofollow">http://www.whale-watch-east.com/research/2003/right_column.html&quot</a>;.
 Please note that I had the Sony DAT checked by a Sony
 technician after the tests were run and was told that the
 recorder was within spec.

 2) It records directly to "wav" format so there is no need
 to convert the "DAT" format to "wav" before starting the
 Computer analysis.

 Further, I have been told that they are very rugged. They
 have been submerged in sea water and washed out, and ran without
 a pause once dry.
