As the exclusive North American distributor for the Sonifex Ltd.
product range, including the Sonifex Courier Hard Disk Recorder, I
felt it necessary to address Tom Thorley's email which was forwarded
to us by Joe Olson of Cetacean Research.

My purpose in responding is to clarify some misconceptions about the
Courier for the record. Most importantly, the Courier was, in fact,
specifically designed for the recording professional, and has very
quality microphone preamps. The Courier should not be lumped into
product groups that include the Nomad Consumer Recording system
recording system. As proof of this fact, the BBC Radio System has
purchased several hundred Couriers which are used by their
radio journalists around the world. The Courier was selected after
BBC engineers tested several other hard disk recorders.

Skywalker Sound utilizes a Courier recording sound effects for their
movies, a number of anthropologists are recording ancient unwritten
languages with a Courier, ornithologists are recording rare bird
sounds, research scientists are doing cetacean research, to name a
 few.

The Courier would be a fantastic replacement for DAT, and would
produce a superior sound recording. The ability to choose file
format, ease of material transfer, and the many other features the
Courier offers for the professional recordist at an extremely
affordable price cannot be ignored. Admittedly, the other
professional recorders articulated do have higher bit rates and
sample rates, but cost significantly more than the Courier.

For additional information on the Courier, we ask that you visit
 www.sonifex.co.uk.

 Kindest regards,

 Fraser Jones
 President

All the recorders discussed (nomad/sonifex) on the list are certainly
from an audiophile point of view seriously compromised by bad quality
mic preamps etc. and would not be used by professional sound
recordists, and although recordings may be of sufficient quality for
analysis there are significantly better products being developed for
the broadcast industry (significantly more expensive to!). Please
check out HHB portadrive, Sound devices 744, Core audio PD system,
Sony DMX P-01 (digital mixer), Fostex PD6, Nagra V, Deva and Aaton.
This is a comprehensive list of all the high end audio acquisition
devices/manufacturers on the market or coming to market at the moment
all will operate at 24bit 96kHz some beyond and they hit various
 price points.
