Greetings, I'm a graduate student at Northern
Arizona University, and I'm
interested in doing research that involves the simple analysis of bird
calls.

...

I'm running behavioral trials in a room that's about
3 m square. Each trial
involves one bird being in the room for 30 min. I've noticed that during
trials, some birds are very vocal, and some birds are less vocal. I'd like
to quantify the amount of time each bird spends making noise (for example,
"Bird X made 7 min and 20 sec of noise during the 30 min trial"). I don't
need to do any additional analysis of call types.

I'm hoping that I can simply record each trial on a
cassette tape, then play
each tape back into a computer that could calculate the number of minutes of
noise made per trial. Are there cheap and easy-to-use resources available
that could do something like this? If so, I'd greatly appreciate your
recommendations. If you're not aware of any, could you recommend someone
who might be able to help me?
Thank you so much for your help. Cheers.
